DUTIES

The Faculty of International Education at Vancouver Island University (VIU) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean. VIU attracts over 1250 international students each year for short- and long-term programs in English language and a wide variety of academic disciplines at undergraduate and graduate levels, including MBA. The Faculty is responsible for overseeing all international students, programs and activities on campus, from international recruitment to international student support services and study abroad. The Faculty also houses the English Language Centre, which provides certificate and short-term programs at a variety of levels and Malaspina High School, which teaches the grade 10-12 BC curriculum to Canadian and international students.

Working in collaboration with the Dean, this position is responsible for the academic planning, budget, organization, and management functions that facilitate international student success in English language and undergraduate/graduate programs at Vancouver Island University. The Associate Dean will have primary responsibility for the strategic development and operations of the English Language Centre, including supervision of approximately 30 faculty and staff, and co-ordination of student success initiatives and program accreditation. He/she will also develop and co-ordinate initiatives aimed at international student retention across the campus and will maintain constructive working relationships with other academic departments. The Associate Dean is part of the decanal administrative team and will deal with day-to-day business to permit the smooth and efficient running of the Dean's office.

The Associate Dean's major responsibilities are to:
- oversee the daily operations of the English Language Centre, in collaboration with the Chair, including faculty workload and timetabling, student support, professional development and evaluation;
- co-ordinate the hiring, orientation and supervision of faculty and staff in the English Language Centre;
- develop and co-ordinate, in collaboration with other VIU faculties and departments, an international student retention plan;
- maintain liaison and communicate regularly with all International Education Area teams and relevant VIU departments
- ensure that the provisions of collective agreements and University polices are observed and advise faculty and staff of policies and practices as required;
- work with the Dean, faculty, and staff to establish and implement strategic plans for the English Language Centre;
- identify new program needs and opportunities and co-ordinate the design and implementation of new programs;
- assist in program reviews and co-ordinate preparation for the accreditation of ESL programs
- promote and support research and professional activities in English language teaching and the related needs of international students;
- monitor assigned operating budgets, including regular checking of budget performance against plans and taking corrective action as required;
- undertake occasional travel to key international student markets;
- assume responsibilities as Acting Dean in the Dean's absence and take on special tasks and projects as assigned by the Dean.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Minimum of a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, or other relevant discipline, from an appropriately accredited institution and extensive knowledge of trends and developments in ESL/EAL teaching to adults. At least two years' successful leadership in the post-secondary environment, including faculty/staff hiring and supervision. Demonstrated team building skills and ability to provide leadership in a multi-union environment. Three years successful post-secondary teaching experience, preferably in an ESL context. Demonstrated expertise in program development and evaluation within a post-secondary context. Demonstrated competence with budget development, monitoring and expenditure control. Excellent written and oral presentation skills.

Preferred

A record of research and scholarly activity in English language teaching or related field. Significant cross-cultural and/or overseas experience. Proficiency in a language other than English.
