Milner Gardens & Woodland has created an effective hands-on education program for the younger members (Shoots) of its community (Roots). In the Shoots with Roots program young shoots and older roots explore the old-growth woodland to learn about safety, flora, fauna and lore. They prepare, tend and harvest the Children’s Food Garden, and revel in the beauty, diversity and social history of the Artist's Garden.
At the heart of the program are the multi-visit on-site sessions for school classes. Now in its seventh year, this multi-visit program has garnered widespread participation and support. The multi-visit program balances time and space with group field trips, pre-school programs, school break camps and birthday parties. Off-site, a Seed Dispersal program is taken to classrooms and community events to share native plant and organic vegetable planting activities and information.
*The Shoots with Roots school program functions on the generosity of grants and donations*
