Special Offer for VIU Alumni golfers
All VIU employees and alumni are now eligible to receive a $10 discount off any green fee at Fairwinds Golf Club (includes winter and twilight rates). In addition to the discount, Fairwinds will contribute $10 from every green fee purchased by VIU employees and alumni to the Vancouver Island University Foundation “Adopt A Student Fund” for student awards, scholarships and bursaries.
One guest of VIU employees and alumni will also be eligible to receive the $10 discount per green fee. Employees and alumni must present their staff or alumni card at the Pro shop in order to receive the discounted rate.
Note: Discount eligible for VIU staff and alumni green fee purchases only. Restaurant and pro shop purchases are excluded from this agreement.

Alumni Award Winners Announced
Congratulations to 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award winner Terence Fitzgerald ('92) and Alumni Horizon Award winner Tanya Griffiths ('00). Fitzgerald, with experience in comic books, toys, movies, music videos, and high-end clothing, is a multiple-award winner (one Grammy, two MTV Video Music awards, and two Emmys) and is currently working on a pilot for a new HBO series. Griffiths was accepted directly into PhD studies at UBC following her undergrad studies at VIU and earned her doctorate in 2006. She accepted a post-doctoral research position at the University of Calgary with the Gastrointestinal Research Group studying pathogenic intestinal bacteria, and recently enrolled in UBC's medical school. Fitzgerald and Griffths will accept their awards at VIU's June convocation ceremonies.

Honorary Alumni Award Nominations
Members of the Vancouver Island University community who wish to nominate a alumni candidate for an honorary award are encouraged to submit a nomination package to the President's Office. Packages are available online.
There are two honorary alumni awards:
Distinguished Alumni Award: recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of living Vancouver Island University alumni who have earned provincial or national prominence as a result of their exceptional professional achievements and/or service to society.
Alumni Horizon Award: recognizes the outstanding achievements of Vancouver Island University alumni early in their careers (within 10 years of receiving a credential from VIU).

University Designation

In May, Malaspina received news that provincial legislation had been passed to enable Malaspina's university designation and name change to Vancouver Island University. The Alumni Office has received a large number of calls and e-mails from graduates regarding the change, and we appreciate the interest and feedback! VIU has created an university designation information page that details many of the commonly asked questions; we urge you to take a look.
Graduation Season
Registrar Fred Jacklin gives a graduate her BA degree at the Spring 2008 BA Convocation at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo.

Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies - Final Recitals
The VIU Music Department will be graduating its first class of Bachelor Music in Jazz Studies in 2008. Fourth-year students performed their graduation recitals in June, including Marisha Devoin (fourth from left), performing an arrangement for seven bass guitars!
