If you are a university program student at VIU, chances are you will be taking at least some courses from among the many offered by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Therefore, let me welcome you to the Faculty, which represents a total of ten departments in the fine and performing arts, design, and in the humanities.
Our faculty have always been committed to providing high quality instruction to undergraduates in order to help students achieve their potential, prepare themselves for job markets, and stimulate their minds and imaginations. Faculty are also actively involved in scholarship, much of which applies directly to their teaching; and this connection can prove quite valuable and exciting for students. Many programs also provide “hands-on” learning experiences through project work, use of electronic databases, computer applications, media production, internships, and research associate opportunities.
Our departments of History, English, Modern Languages, First Nations Studies, Women’s Studies, and Media Studies serve students from all programs, providing both essential courses and elective possibilities as well as B.A. Majors or Minors to students within the departments.
As well, Creative Writing and Journalism, Art and Design, Theatre, and Music provide students with options to explore their own creativity and production potential. Fruitful interdisciplinary combinations are also possible among the various Arts and Humanities departments, and all of this moves students beyond simply fulfilling requirements and into the realm of contributing to Vancouver Island University “campus life”.
