Culinary Arts - 1 Year Certificate

Offered at Nanaimo, Cowichan & Powell River campuses

Effective November 15, 2008, applicants with Grade 12 graduation are not required to write the assessment.  Those without Grade 12 graduation will write the assessment which covers the following areas:

Word problems relating to recipes, food preparation and basic arithmetic

  • metric measurement of mass (grams, kilograms) & volume (litres, millilitres)
  • imperial measurement of mass (ounces, pounds) & volume (cups)
  • converting from Imperial to Metric
  • converting recipes to serve fewer or more portions
  • converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius and vice versa

13 questions on:

  • adding, subtracting, multiplying & dividing whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent

Approximately 90 minutes

A dictionary is not permitted. A calculator is permitted.  A converstion chart is provided.

To help you prepare for the assessment, the following Learning Centres are available at no cost:

Nanaimo Learning Centre, Building 205, Room 204, usually open Mon – Fri 10:30 – 1:30. Call 250 740 6425 to confirm hours of operation.

Cowichan Campus Learning Centre, Building 601, Call 250 746 3509 to schedule an appointment.

Powell River Campus Learning Centre, Call 604 485 2878 to confirm hours of operation.
