Art, Design & Performing Arts Programs

Applied Arts—Interior Design Diploma

2-year Diploma Program
Fee Category: I

NOTE: Effective September 2008 a Bachelor of Interior Design will be offered instead of the Interior Design Diploma.

The Program

This two-year diploma program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn and develop many marketable skills for a career in Interior Design. The program covers such topics as design theory and fundamentals, colour theory, art and design history, characteristics and application of materials, building construction techniques, drawing and sketching, drafting, colour boards, and rendering. A two-week work experience is included.

The Applied Arts—Interior Design diploma is awarded to students who successfully complete 63 credits (60 credits in Interior Design, and 3 credits in English).

Note: All students enrolled in art or design studio courses offered within VIU’s Art and Design department must complete mandatory safety training session(s) before they will be allowed to use the department’s facilities. Each student must purchase and use equipment as specified by the department and sold through the VIU Bookstore.

A free information session for prospective students is usually held in February. Contact the Advising Centre for the date, time and location, 250-740-6410, or visit viu.ca/infosessions.

Admission Requirements

Notes on Admission

  • Students must provide a portfolio or be prepared to complete an assignment for acceptance into the program.
  • Due to the nature of the contemporary work place, students should be familiar with fundamental computer skills such as word processing before considering an education in Interior Design, to ensure they can complete essays, reports and resumes.
  • Enrolment in this program is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.

Special Expenses

Students should expect to spend at least $1,000 each semester for books and supplies, plus an additional $1,000 in the first semester of the first year for equipment. It is also recommended that students be prepared to purchase their own computer and CAD software during Intersession.

All fees are subject to change without prior notice.
