Pulp and Paper Operations
9-month Certificate Program
Note: The Pulp and Paper Operations Program is not currently being offered.
The Program
This 9-month, full-time certificate program covers all aspects of the pulp and paper industry, including environmental awareness, pulp and paper processes, power and recovery, safe work practices, and computer skills.
The program will provide students with a strong theoretical understanding of the processes required to produce pulp and paper, knowledge of the skills required to operate the various equipment, and the quality control systems used to meet product and environmental standards. Students will also have the opportunity to spend time in local pulp and paper mills to gain on-site experience. By the end of the program students will have a solid understanding of how the industry works and the type of job opportunities available.
Admission Requirements
- Successful completion of Grade 12, or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma.
- Assessment testing in general reading comprehension, along with industry-oriented testing in math, mechanical reasoning, spatial reasoning and abstract reasoning.
- Personal profile.
- Participation in an industry orientation process that may include:
- participating in a mill orientation tour;
- participating in a selection interview.

Notes on Admission
During the selection process, preference will be given to candidates with:
- Work experience as outlined in the written paper (personal profile).
- Academic qualifications including Math 12, Physics 11, and Chemistry 11.
- Level of commitment as determined through the selection interview.
- Level of results on assessment tests.
The pulp and paper industry can be a physically demanding environment, and applicants must:
- Be physically able to perform tasks required for successful completion of the program.
- Be in good health and be able to take part in the mill-based components of the program.
Admission to the Pulp and Paper Operations program is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program.
Start Date and Application Deadline
The program begins October 11. All applicants must have completed the application process, including assessment testing and have submitted a personal profile prior to admission into the program.
