About Our Staff
Nahanni AckroydNahanni enjoys a wide range of professional interests, and has worked as an educator for the Royal BC Museum, the Maritime Museum of BC and the Calgary Zoo. A former Malaspina College student, her educational background includes undergraduate work in music and English literature; her graduate degree is in Education Administration. In Continuing Studies, Nahanni is responsible for programming the ElderCollege, Arts, Languages, Travel Tours, Writing and Personal Interest areas for Nanaimo and Parksville. |

Sheila CooperSheila's background is in Adult Education and she holds a Masters in Education (SFU) in Curriculum Design and Instruction. Sheila has worked in the field of Continuing Education at Vancouver Island University as an Administrative Coordinator since 1990. Sheila is responsible for managing activities that provide flexible educational options to accommodate the changing needs of learners and to reach new audiences including Summer Session and Online Teaching and Learning. |

Cheryl DillFor the past 17 years, Cheryl has been involved in post secondary education, initially as an instructor, and for the past 12 years in continuing education administration. Currently, she manages courses and certificate programs related to the field of health and human services. She holds bachelor degrees in Science and Education and a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training. Cheryl is happy to be back in the classroom as a part-time instructor within the Event Management Certificate program. Cheryl thrives on positive change, as an advocate of lifelong learning and community volunteerism. |

Marion KnostMarion has worked with Vancouver Island University since 1992, and has an extensive background in Continuing Education. She believes that organizational success is influenced by many factors, including a well-trained, highly motivated workforce, and that today's businesses should understand the value of learning as a means of enhancing their core competencies. Continous learning is simply good business, and Marion's greatest asset is her belief in providing the community with oustanding customer service, while anyalzing specific training needs, bringing in expert program developers, while offering flexible training delivery methods; in-house; on-site; locally or regionally. Marion currently manages Contract Training, Marine, First Aid & Safety, Culinary Arts, and Trade Skills. |

Sharon StyveSharon Styve has worked in as an administrator in adult education for more than 25 years, including adult basic education and continuing education. Currently, Sharon is Manager of Planning and Quality Assurance for the Centre for Continuing Studies, and facilitates program development in the Health and Human Services portfolio. So You'd Like To Teach A Continuing Education Course...
We welcome proposals from people interested in sharing their skills, interests and expertise with our community by teaching Continuing Education courses.
STEP ONE
If you are interested in offering a course, we invite you to provide the Centre
for Continuing Studies with the following:
1. Your Resume AND
2. A Course Proposal (complete the Course
Proposal Template), to include:
- Course title
- Brief description of the content/objectives to be covered
- Description of who the potential participants might be
- List of required resources, supplies, software and hardware requirements
- Length of the course (number of sessions or hours)
- Outline of class sessions
- Your phone number, mailing and email address
Submit your proposal to the Centre for Continuing Studies, indicating that it is a new course proposal on the envelope, in the email ccs@viu.ca or the fax (250) 740-6452 subject line.
Note: Course descriptions may be edited for marketing purposes. You may find it useful to review our current Continuing Education Calendar on the website. It will give you an idea of the kinds of programming we offer, what is already available, and where you might have something new to contribute.
STEP TWO
Your proposal will be reviewed by one of our Program Coordinators who will
contact you during our upcoming planning period. In reviewing course proposals,
Program Coordinators consider:
- Potential market demand
- Fit with other related courses we are offering
- Uniqueness versus availability of similar courses in the community
- Timeliness and relevance of the content
- Instructor qualifications
- Input from our advisory groups
Course Planning Periods:
February to mid-May - For courses to be offered in the period September - March
September - early December - For courses to be offered in the period April - August
