Master Limited (60T)

The Master Limited certificate is required by Masters of vessels up to 60 gross tonnage. The
certificate is valid on passenger and/or non-passenger carrying vessels and vessels engaged in
towing of less than 60 gross tons. This certificate is restricted as to tonnage, area of operation
and to named vessels.

  • Marine Basic First Aid (not scheduled)
  • MED A2 - Basic Safety or Small Passenger-carrying Basic Safety (not scheduled)
  • Master Ltd (60T) (not scheduled)
  • Transport Canada Oral examination

Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certificate 
Restricted to Fishing vessels under 15 gross tonnage and operating within 25 miles of the shore and 100 miles of a safe port.

  • MED A3-Non Pleasure Vessel Basic Safety (not scheduled)
  • Marine Basic First Aid (not scheduled)
  • Small Vessel Operator

Certificate of Service as Master of the Fishing Vessel under 60 gross tonnage
This certificate will only be available until 2017. The holder of this certificate may act as Master on a fishing vessel up to 60 gross tonnage engaged on unlimited, a near coastal, class 1 or 2 or sheltered water voyages. Two options are available for qualified persons to obtain this certificate see A and B:

A: Certificate of Service as Master of the Fishing Vessel under 60 gross tonnage
Option 1
For the fisher with at least 12 months of sea service acquired prior to July 2007 as master of a
fishing vessels at least 15 gross tonnage or at least 12 m in overall length while engaged on
voyages that the certificate sought would permit and holds.

Courses required :

  • MED with respect to Basic Safety (MED A1) (not scheduled)
  • ROC-MC (radio) certificate (not scheduled)

B: Certificate of Service as Master of the Fishing Vessel under 60 gross tonnage
Option 2
If the applicant has not acquired at least seven fishing seasons of experience as master of a
fishing vessel, with no two of those seasons having occurred in the same year.

Courses required :

Fishing Master 4
The holder may act as Master of a fishing vessel up to 100 gross tonnage or as OOW of a
fishing vessel of any tonnage engaged on near coastal and sheltered waters voyage. An
applicant must have at least 12 months of deck duties on a fishing vessel of at least 6 metres or
more.

  • MED A1 with respect to Basic Safety (not scheduled)
  • ROC-MC (not scheduled)
  • SEN Limited (not scheduled)
  • Transport Canada Oral Examination

Certificate of Service as a Watch Keeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel of Less than 100 gross tonnage
Effective immediately, every fishing vessel over 14 metres, and by November 2010 every fishing vessel
over 13 metres,  and by November 2012, every fishing vessel over 12 metres which operates away from port for 24 hours or more, will be required to carry a second certified person to perform watch
keeping duties and radio watch duties, in addition to the master. This person must hold a
Certificate of Service as a Watchkeeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel of less than 100 gross tonnage.

tonnage

Option 1
For an applicant having at LEAST seven (7) fishing seasons as an officer in charge of a
navigational watch of a fishing vessel of at least 15 gross tonnage or at least 12 metres
LOA,with no two seasons having occurred in the same year and prior to July 1st, 2007.

Courses required :

Certificate of Service as a Watch Keeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel of Less than 100 gross tonnage.
Option 2
For those fishers with several years' experience who do not have the required seven (7) fishing
seasons, in charge of the navigational watch of a fishing vessel but have obtained at least 12
months sea service on a vessel of at least 12 metres or 15 gross tonnage.

  • SVOPC (not scheduled)
  • MED Basic Safety (Feb, Mar start dates)
  • ROC-MC (not scheduled)

Watchkeeping Officer of a Fishing Vessel not more that 150 gross tonnage and not more than 24 metres in length
A completely new Fishing Vessel Certificate of Competency which may be the easiest route for
a fisher to qualify as a Watch Keeping Mate.

Courses required:

  • Six (6) months of sea service on a fishing vessel of at least six (6) metres LOA
  • Marine Medical Certificate
  • SEN Ltd (not scheduled)
  • Marine Basic First Aid (not scheduled)
  • MED Basic Safety (Feb, Mar start dates)
  • ROC-MC (not scheduled)
  • Pass a written examination in Chartwork and Navigational Safety
  • Transport Canada Oral examination on General Seamanship

Transport Canada Exam Fees

Transport Canada written and oral examination fees are not included in VIU / MEA course fees.

Examination fees are due and payable to Transport Canada examination centre in cash 
14 days prior to sitting any Transport Canada examination.

Transport Canada CDN numbers

Transport Canada requires all students acquire a CDN number in order to become certified. Students must contact Transport Canada prior to their course completion and fill out an EXN 3 form.
Certificates will not be issued without a CDN number.
