FIELD BIOLOGY

Experience field biology at the majestic Milner Gardens & Woodland; 70 acres of precious old growth forest and wetland, breathtaking oceanfront horticulture garden and social history galore. Share the fun of hands-on learning about Vancouver Island ecosystems and the techniques used to research them. EARTH SCIENCES

Explore the wonders of our Earth through a series of fun, hands-on activities. Our Earth has a deep history and our understanding of the Earth has changed dramatically in recent history. What kind of evidence has brought scientists to our current understanding of the Earth? What are the processes that happen below and above Earth’s surface to create the spectacular landscapes and features we witness every day? Come and learn with our Earth Sciences instructors about this fascinating place we call home.
Anticipated activities:
- create a geology notebook
- meet Professor Flatterre for a lively debate on whether the Earth is flat or round
- create edible tectonic plates
- create model volcanoes, seismograph and convection cells
- learn to identify rock types
- learn the major minerals and how to identify them
- create contour maps

ANTHROPOLOGY

Explore anthropology by sampling different aspects of its study, from CSI-type work with bones to the analysis of data from an excavation. A variety of instructors will help you gain a greater appreciation of peoples and cultures past and present from here and from far away.

- Exploring kinship, how to make a family tree
- Learning about culture: Everyday life in a Tanzanian village
- What can you learn from bones?
- Excavate a “mystery” site

FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE

Explore the world of fish, shellfish and aquatic bugs inhabiting the marine and freshwater ecosystems of beautiful Vancouver Island. Let instructors from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department be your guides through several hands-on activities where you will learn how these animals are adapted to each unique habitat. Be prepared to get wet, dirty and have a lot of fun!

- Tour university hatcheries and aquaria
- Invertebrate lab
- Gyotaku (fish printing, bring a clean, plain t-shirt)

UNIVERSITY: Get Ready, Get Set, GO!

What kinds of skills do you need to enter university? Adult Basic Education is the very place to acquire these skills and courses before entering into university or college programs. Engage in activities in a variety of subject areas that set the foundation to be successful in your educational field of choice. Come and learn what foundational skills we offer, and have fun participating at the same time!

- Science Lab
- “Any Future Einsteins in the crowd?” practical math as it relates to physics
- Re-enact a short-story to learn about ‘theme’ and its relevance to everyday life
- “Who needs Card Shops?” create greeting cards on computers

TUITION FEE OF $99 + HST per participant includes all major activities, materials, a program T-shirt and the Thursday night BBQ. Participants are responsible for all meals except the BBQ.
