Regional Development Projects

As globalization and technological forces rapidly change the world in which we live, regions are assuming new and important roles in economic and social development. For example, the interface of technology and global markets now enables regionally based companies to compete in ways not previously thought possible.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), regions like central Vancouver Island will be most successful in this new and evolving environment only if they:

  • Achieve a high level of cooperation among key sectors in the regional economy, including private industry, government, and education.

  • Value lifelong learning among their citizens and use a concerted and coordinated effort in adult and continuing education to develop and upgrade the skills that are required to respond effectively to new challenges and opportunities.

The OECD identifies Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as key players in any successful strategy of regional development. HEIs must reach out to engage partners and to provide education, research, and service that support a coordinated approach to the economic and social development of the region and its communities.

VIU's Centre for Continuing Studies

Vancouver Island University has established the Centre for Continuing Studies to coordinate and strengthen the institution's contribution to economic, social and cultural development in the central Vancouver Island region. The Centre will work closely with Faculties, Regional Campuses, and other departments in the institution to:

  • Connect Vancouver Island University with constituencies far beyond its traditional student population by reinforcing existing partnerships and building new ones and by linking with community groups, private sector and professional organizations, voluntary agencies, and various levels of government.

  • Facilitate the development of innovative learning opportunities and applied research projects by assisting with proposal development, program design and delivery, and the effective use of technology.
