How to the Apply to 2nd Year Engineering
The second year engineering program offers students an excellent opportunity to continue their studies at VIU while maintain the requirements of the second year ECE program at the University of Victoria. This transfer program is unique in that students, once accepted into second year engineering at VIU, are guaranteed admission into third year at UVic provided that they complete their courses successfully with a minimum, continuing GPA (the same as needed to go from second to third year at UVic).
This page is intended to outline the application procedure and time line for events in your second year of studies. Please feel free to contact Brian Dick, the Engineering Advisor, if you have further questions.
Step 1: Do you have the Entry Requirements?
To apply, you should:
- Have completed the first year transfer curriculum for UVic with a minimum GPA of a high C+ to low B- (the GPA requirement can shift depending on the levels set by UVic)
- Are interested in entering either Electrical engineering of Computer engineering at the University of Victoria
In some cases, you may not have the full first year curriculum but may still be eligible for conditional acceptance into the second year transfer program.
Step 2: Application for Admission
You must submit an application form to Brian Dick, the Engineering Advisor, by no later than 31-Jan.
When your application has been received and processed, you should receive a confirmation of acceptance letter from the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy. Read it carefully and keep it in the a safe place.
As a continuing student, you should also receive a notice from VIU indicating your eligibility to take second year courses. If you have not received this letter by the middle of May, log into your student record and click 'I accept' when asked if you accept the offer of enrolment.
Step 3: Pay Tuition Deposit
A $200 tuition deposition will be required to confirm your acceptance; this deposit is applied towards you first semester's tuition fees. The date by which you must pay this deposit will be sent to you with your registration materials, although typically is on or before 30-Jun.
Step 4: Funding Sources -- Scholarships, Bursaries, Grants, and Loans
Going to university can be expensive, though several sources of funding may be possible for you to minimize the cost.
- Explore the Financial Aids and Awards site for links to government and institutional assistance programs.
- Specific scholarships/awards are available to students entering into the second year engineering transfer program. The Engineering Department highly recommends that you apply for these awards as the limited enrolment in this program enhances your ability to receive funding. The deadline for scholarship/award applications is typically near the end of April.
- Ensure you apply for government student loan programs to make up the difference.
Step 5: Enroll in your Courses
The course curriculum for both computer and electrical engineering is shown
below. It is recommended that you develop a time table of your courses prior
to your registration date. This is done through your on-line student
record. Also, you should feel free to contact Brian Dick, the Engineering
Advisors, if you have questions on what courses you should take and when.
