School visits
Faculty members in the Physics, Engineering and Astronomy Department take part in the Scientists in School (SiS) program, "a government funded organization dedicated to motivating interest in science and technology." On February 21, 2008, the Engineering Department hosted the SiS Volunteer Forum/Info session in Nanaimo.
Dr. Brian Dick, who is the Engineering advisor, is the Engineering professor who volunteers for the SiS program. He provides an entertaining introduction to Science (primarily electricity and magnetism) with demos which never fail to arouse the interest of the children. Over the last year, Dr. Dick has visited:
- North Oyster Elementary (Ladysmith)
- Drinkwater Elementary (Duncan)
- Rutherford Elementary (Nanaimo)
- North Cedar Elementary (Nanaimo/Cedar)
- Queen of Angels School (Duncan)
- Denman Island Community School (Denman Island)
Dr. Dick has also volunteered much of his time in promoting Physics and Engineering to high school students, usually through demostration and a Q&A session. Over the last year, he has visited:
- Wellington Secondary
- Dover Bay Secondary
- Kwalikum Secondary
- Ladysmith Secondary
