Irina Palm

Presented by Worldbridger Film Series

Maggie, a 50-year-old widow, desperately needs some money to pay for a medical treatment for her ill grandson. After several unfruitful attempts to find a job, Maggie finds herself roaming the streets of London Soho. Her eye is caught by a small poster in the window of a “shop” called “Sexy World” which reads: “Hostess wanted.” Too desperate, dazed, and naïve to realize what she’s doing, she takes the job. Soon, she transforms herself into the much sought after and highly paid “Irina Palm.” Along with her new persona, Maggie also gains renewed self-confidence, realizing she is not as old and unattractive as she thought. However, as her clandestine existence provokes the suspicions of her family and neighbours, her work and personal worlds start to collide.

This film won the David di Donatello award for Best European Union Film, as well as the Italian Golden Globe for best European Film. It was also nominated for both a Golden Bear Award for best movie at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the International Jury award at the Sãn Paulo International Film Festival.

Human Wildlife Issues at Pacific Rim National Park

Presented by Protected Areas and Poverty Reduction (PAPR)

Speaker: Rick Searle and Bob Hansen

A Canada-Africa Research Alliance

What do you see when you think of Parks and Protected Areas all around the globe?

Do you see poverty?

Although poverty is generally not the first image that is being associated with National Parks and other protected areas, in reality it is part of the picture in the same way as biodiversity conservation. Protected areas are a valuable effort to protect our ecosystems and can be beneficial for local communities. However, there is always the other side of the coin. Due to higher taxes and living costs that come with tourism growth, communities can also experience increased social problems, loss of cultural traditions, and unemployment.

The PAPR project aims to address challenges of reducing rural poverty and ensuring environmental sustainability by focusing on protected areas and their adjacent communities in the three countries – Canada, Tanzania and Ghana.

Come and join us on our journey to investigate the issues of poverty reduction and protected areas in our 2010 speaker series.

World Water Day 2010

Join alongside classmates, campus groups, community organisations and business to celebrate and create discussion and dialogue around water and its usage.

Why: Clean Water for a Healthy World

Every year, 1,500 cubic kilometres of wastewater are produced globally. While waste and wastewater can be reused productively for energy and irrigation, it usually is not. In developing countries 80 percent of all waste is being discharged untreated, because of lack of regulations and resources. And population and industrial growth add new sources of pollution and increased demand for clean water to the equation. Human and environmental health, drinking and agricultural water supplies for the present and future are at stake, still water pollution rarely warrants mention as a pressing issue.

To do something about that UN-Water has chosen Clean Water for a Healthy World as theme for World Water Day 2010. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality at the political level so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.
