Heavy Equipment Operator
VIU's Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) school provides intensive, hands-on training in the operation of heavy equipment, routine maintenance of machinery, and the practical field operations of excavating, land clearing, grading and road building. There are six major Heavy Equipment Operator program areas:
- Machine Training, covering excavator, dozer, grader, front-end loader, backhoe, skid steer, dumptruck and pup, articulated rock truck and forklift.
- Driver Training and Airbrakes, covering Class 1 and 3 Driver Training, Airbrake Endorsement and Long Haul Mountain Training.
- Industry Training, providing customized Heavy Equipment Operator training at employer sites.
- ITO HEO Foundation, developed with BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, provides pre-requisite requirements for the ITA HEO Technician Apprenticeship program.
- ITO HEO Technician, the Industry Training Authority apprenticeship program for those pursuing a Certificate of Qualification for the operation of one or more types of heavy equipment.
- Road Building & Heavy Construction Equipment Operator, combines HEO Foundation, HEO Technician and Machine Training into one comprehensive course.

The VIU Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO) program is the only one of its kind offered at a publicly-funded post-secondary school in British Columbia. Courses can be customized to meet individual needs, as well as those of employers and industry. VIU's Heavy Equipment Operator school specializes in preparing students for work in the Forestry, Pulp and Paper, Logging, Road Building, Heavy Construction and Mining industries.
