New Student Scholarships

The following scholarships are available for new international students to Vancouver Island University.

Unless otherwise indicated, the scholarship is applied to the student’s second consecutive academic term.

New Applicants

VIU World-Wide Entrance Scholarships

Number : 20 each fall
Amount: $1,000 to 2,000 each
Criteria: 
Provided annually to exceptional new long-term academic undergraduate student applicants (not one semester Education Abroad or exchange students).  One thousand to $2,000 scholarships to the top 20 applicants entering in the Fall semester based on entering grades from submitted transcripts.  No application necessary.

British Columbia High School International Excellence Entrance Scholarship

Number : Minimum 2 each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
Criteria: 
All International student applicants who have applied to attend VIU in their graduating year from a British Columbia High School with a Dogwood Certificate. Highest average in combined marks of English 12 (combined provincial and school mark) Social Studies 11 and Math 11 (principles or applications). Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Entrance Scholarship

Number: Open each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
New international student graduates with an IB diploma. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

British Columbia Offshore School Entrance Scholarship

Number: Minimum 2 each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
Criteria:
All international student graduates from BC Offshore schools are eligible. The awards will be given to the two students with the highest combined scores on any two Grade 12 provincially examinable courses excluding their first language. Awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University in their second academic semester. No application necessary.

Continuing Students

VIU Peer Helper Award

Number: Minimum 2 each fall (awarded in November)
Amount: $1,000 tuition credit
Awarded to a Continuing full-time ESL or undergraduate student enrolled in a program lasting for at least 14 weeks. Student should have achieved a GPA of at least a "C" in the previous academic year, participated in the Peer Helper program for a minimum of two semesters and have a minimum of 30 hours of volunteer work in the Peer Helper program in each semester.

VIU English Language Program Achievement Award

Number:  Minimum 2 each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
Available to 2 VIU English Language Program international student level 5 graduates recognizing outstanding achievement in their final 2 semesters of VIU University Preparation Program ESL studies. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University.

Malaspina High School International Excellence Award

Number: Minimum 2 each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
Malaspina High School international student graduates recognizing outstanding achievement in their final academic year of studies. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University.

International Education Academic Excellence Scholarship

Number: Minimum 10 each fall
Amount: $1,000 each
Continuing full-time international undergraduate students demonstrating outstanding academic achievement in the previous academic year at VIU. No application necessary, awarded as a tuition credit at Vancouver Island University. For full-time students only and students may only receive this award once.

VIU Campus and Community Award

Number: Minimum 2 each fall
Amount: $500 each
Continuing full-time international ESL and undergraduate students demonstrating outstanding community service achievement in the previous academic year at VIU. Application is available at the Centre for International Education reception (Bldg. 255).

VIU International Student of the Year Award

Number: Three each fall
Amount:  $500 (1) and $250 (2)
Continuing full-time international ESL and undergraduate students demonstrating outstanding academic and community achievement in the previous academic year at VIU.

VIU Outstanding International Student Athlete Award

Number: One for each recognized VIU Varsity Sport (9)
Amount: $500 each
Awards provided based on the recommendation of the VIU Director of Athletics.

New Canadian Scholarship (Community Student)

Number: One each fall
Amount: $500 each

Awarded to a student in the ELC program who is a community student (Canadian Immigrant or citizen). Applicants will need to submit a letter explaining why they are studying English and how the award will support their goal in learning English. The scholarship committee will select the winner.

David E.Jones Award

Number: One each fall (awarded in November)
Amount: $500 each
Awarded to a continuing International academic student demonstrating outstanding achievement. Based on recommendation of the department. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the Spring term.

Around the World Travel Services Award

Number: One each fall (awarded in November)
Amount: $500
Awarded to a continuing International academic student demonstrating outstanding achievement. Based on recommendation of the department. Funds awarded as a tuition credit for the Spring term.

VIU International Student Graduate of the Year Award

Number: Two for Degree; one for Diploma
Amount: Gift certificates, certificates and lunch with the Dean
Awarded to graduating degree and diploma students in the spring semester. Students must be in good academic standing.

VIU Post Degree Diploma in Business (PDDB) Award

Number: One student each year
Amount: $500
Awarded to a PDDB student with the highest graduating Grade Point Average (GPA). No application necessary.
