13/06/07 - 5th YEAR PASSES !!
The CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association) approved the fifth year of eligibility for Collegiate athletes this past week at the AGM in Victoria.

Several restriction apply.
Athletes that have completed four years prior to 06/07 are not eligible to return but those that have competed for 3 or less years can.
Fourth year athletes from 06/07 can compete next season.

The Mariners had an impressive graduating 4th year class of 18 student-athletes in 06/07.
Now the M's are hoping most of them will be back for their fifth.
Senior athletes make for a successful program.
Last years senior athletes led the Mariners to two national medals two provincial titles and the overall BCCAA aggregate award in 06/07.
Adding the fifth year can only enhance the Mariners chances of another great season.
Plus …..
There were originally three years of eligibility in the CCAA and in the early 90's this was bumped to four.

The Coast Bastion Inn was the site of the Mariner Awards Banquet on Wednesday night.
More awards were given out this year than any other year !! PHOTOGRAPHS
18 provincial all-stars, 10 BCCAA athletes of the year, 12 BCCAA Academic excellence awards and 19 senior athletes were recognized.

The Athletes of the year for 2006-07 were Ryan Thibault and Christina Chi from the volleyball teams.
A lso from the volleyball teams, were the Freshmen Athletes of the year Robert Lanenga and Lindsay McLoughlin.

04/04/07 - PRESIDENT'S LUNCHEON !!ralph
The president of Vancouver Island University Dr. Ralph Nilson hosted a luncheon on April 4th for those athletes that won national medals. He recognized the hard work that is needed to achieve such success and that future mariners are watching.

SEVERAL 06/07 MARINERS CRACK TOP 10
Jessica Stubbs (rebounds) and Maria Kirkbride (points/rebounds) made the Mariner All-Time top ten for women's statistics. In Men's Volleyball Robert Lanenga, Riley Kaminski and Ryan Thibault compiled enough aces and Robert also made the kills top ten.
Jeremy Semple has placed second to himself in digs averaging 3.09, last season he averaged 3.11 to become the all-time leader.
In women's volleyball there were no changes in Aces or Kills but Bryanne Baynes almost surpassed her average last year. She now holds the fifth and sixth spot all-time for Mariner Women's Volleyball digs. Jessica Woldford and Laura Littlejohn now hold the 3rd and fifth spots in the Stuff Block category.
No men's basketball players were able to crack the top ten.

Three national medals for the Malaspina Mariners this weekend.

The Malaspina Mariner Men's Volleyball team won the silver medal at the 2007 CCAA men's Volleyball National Championships hosted at Vancouver Island University.silver Daily News Story
The Mariners lost to Red Deer Kings 25-19, 25-21 and 35-33 in the finals in front of a packed gym standing room only.
Ryan Thibault was the player of the game for the Mariners
The best volleyball ever to be played in Nanaimo !!
Ben Rahier and Oleg Podporin of the Mariners were 1st team All-Stars.

The Women's Volleyball team won the Bronze medal the the Womens National Championships hosted at Capilano. In a five game match they won 15-12 in the final game over Mount Royal College from Alberta.
Player game for the Mariners was Caitlin Moilliet.
Rudi Kitzmann was named to the 1st All-Star team and Laura Littlejohn was on the second team.

09/03/07 - MARINERS ADVANCE IN NATIONALS!!

The Mariner Men's Volleyball team advanced in thrilling fashion last night defeating the Mohawk College Mountaineers 3-2 . The M's battled back from a 2-1 deficit to win in the fifth 15-12.
The Malaspina Gym was packed with Malaspina fans and I am sure it will be tonight
They play the #2 seed the Limiolou Titans from Quebec this evening at 8pm in the semi-finals.

Over in North Vancouver the Mariner Women's team also advanced to the semi-finals defeating the Nipissing University College Lakers from Ontarion in three straight games.
Tonight they face the host college #7 seed Capilano at 8pm.

Janice Wilson was the big winner on the weekend. She was selected from several thousand entries in the tuition draw for malaspina student. Thoughout the season each time a Mal-U student attended a game they would be able t enter the draw.
Janice has won up to $1500 in a Tuition refund.

THE MARINERS ARE GOLDEN

The Mariners are provincial champions !!
The Women's and Men's Volleyball teams brought home the gold this past weekend from the Provincial Championships hosted at UBC-O. The women battled back from 2 games down to defeat the hometown UBC-O  3-2. The men went on to win with ease defeating UCFV 3-0. Both teams will now go onto represent Malaspina and BC at the national championships.
MVP's of the Championships were Mariner setters Ryan Thibault
and Christina Chi.
Mariner player of the game in the finals was Rudi Kitzmann and Maverick Hatch.

nation crazyThe Mal-U Boat was rocking on Friday night !! Both Mariner teams defeated UBC-O with alittle help from the Mal-U Nation. The women started things off with a 3-1 win followed by a thrilling 3-2 victory for the men. Saturday the women once again defeated the Lakers but the men lost their first league match of the season. 07/12/06 - $10,000 for NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
The provincial government has awarded $10,000 to the Vancouver Island University Athletic Department through Hosting B.C., which is part of the 2010 Legacies Now program. The funds will be used for the hosting of the 2007 CCAA National Men's VolleyballChampionships this March.

08/01/07 - 2007 NANAIMO SPORTS ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS!!
The nominees for the 2007 Nanaimo Sports Achievement Awards have been selected and the Mariners are represented by Shane Hyde (coaching high performance), Lauren Lafleur (female team athlete), Riley Kaminski (male team athlete). The awards night is set for February 3rd at the Coast Bastion. Tickets are available at the Coast Bastion Inn or through PacificSport !!


16/11/06 TWO BCCAA ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Matt Kazanowski and Riley Kaminski
have been recognized by the league for having great weekend performances. Matt led the Mariners with 24 points and 10 rebound in a battle with the Camosun Chargers. 2006 All-Canadian Riley Kaminski had 11 kills 2 blocks and 2 aces in a 3-1 win over Camosun. Rileys energy and leadership were key to his performance.

the Men's and Womens Volleyball team defeated COTR Friday and Saturday 3-0 at home and on the road the basketball teams defeated Kwantlen Eagles both days.
The volleyball teams are #1 in the BCCAA standings and the basketball teams are #2.

We know who is number #1 on the Island after the M's dominated our Island Rivals Camosun Chargers this past weekend.
Four for four this weekend in basketball and volleyball action
.
On home court the womens basketball started the winning trend with 65-56 win. Jessica Stubbs controlled the boards with 20 rebounds and also led the M's in scoring with 15 points.
The Men's team had a big game from Matt Kazanowski with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a game that almost got away. The M's hung in for a 3point win 71-68.
Down the road the Chargers hosted our volleyball teams. The Mariners were relentless and came away with 3-0 wins in both matches. Leigh Dreher pounded the Chargers with 9 kills and Bryanne Baynes with 12 digs was digging up the Chargers attempts at an offense.

The undefeated (5-0) Mariner Men's Volleyball team are #3 in Canada while the womens team were #2 but slipped to #7 after a loss to Douglas last weekend.
The College of the Rockies are in town this weekend.

The Men's and Women's volleyball teams were undefeated this past weekend against the Capilano Blues in their first league games. The women won 3-0 and 3-1 while the men went 3-1 then 3-0. The crowd was great and the MAL-U Nation was in full force !!
The 200 free hamburgers were much appreciated by all the fans.

19/02/07 - THE STAGE IS SET FOR BBALL PROVINCIALS

The Mariner basketball teams will enter the Provincials with the Men seeded third and the Women fifth. The women's team won both of their final regular season games over the CBC Bearcats while the men lost one in OT and then won the following day. The Basketball provincials will take place March 1-3 in Abbotsford on the CBC campus.

The Men's basketball team defeated Langara twice this past weekend.
Leading the way for the M's was Ryan Davidson on Friday night with 17 pts and Saturday was Henry Bui with 17pts (5/6 FG, 1/1 on 3pts attempts and 6/6 FT).

Friday night 56 fouls were called !!
The Mariners improve their record to 7-2 in league play and are currently ranked #6 in Canada.
The Womens team lost 64-55 Friday night but Saturday was a different story. With a 18 point lead at the half the M's went on to defeat the defending Provincial Champs 57-42. The Mal Gals have a 6-3 league record and look to be a solid contender for a berth at provincials.

MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEAT LANGARA
A 80-66 win over the Langara Falcons on Saturday, Oct 21st saw Graham Giske score 19 points with Henry Bui and Colin Novak contributing 12 each. NEXT GAMES ..... This Thursday at 8:00pm at the Mal gym and then Friday at 4:00pm @ Dover Bay when they face Northwest University from Kirkland, Washington. Northwest competes in the NAIA Division II and play in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Northwest is located across lake washington from Seattle. One of Northwests claims to fame is the Seattle Seahawks training facility and corporate headquarters located on their 60 acre campus.

M's WIN CAP TOURNAMENT
basketbThe Mariner Men's basketball team went undefeated to win the Capilano Blues Tournament this past weekend. They defeated Langara 69-59 followed by a 97-78 win over CBC and in the finals knocked off UBC -Okanagan 85-62.
Colin Novak led th M's with 17 points. Next action is a game held at Wellington Secondary against Langara Falcons on Oct 21st 1:00pm game time.

27/04/06- TONY BRYCE NAMED MARINER MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH
 

tonThe Malaspina Mariners Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Tony Bryce has been hired as the Head Coach of the Men's Basketball team. Tony is a former member of the Mariner Men's team playing under Mark Simpson from 1989 to 1992. After attending Malaspina Tony completed his Education Degree at the University of Victoria and has been teaching in the local area since graduating. fdfsHe has coached many different High School and Junior High School teams as well as Regional teams. He has also coached at the Vancouver Island Regional Training center. Tony is very highly respected in the local Basketball community and we feel the Men's team will flourish under his direction and we are proud to be hiring a former Mariner to lead the team said Bruce Hunter, Mariner Athletic Director. According to Mark Simpson, former Head Coach of the Mariners, Tony is an outstanding teacher of Basketball. He has excellent technical knowledge and the ability to convey his expertise to his athletes. His teams are always in top condition and are fundamentally sound.
Tony will be assisted by another Malaspina Alumni Bill McWhinnie.
