Sept 19, 2009              VIU   men’s soccer team

big airVIU men travelled to Prince George on the weekend and won 1 – 0.

The team scored in the first 30 seconds to go ahead of UNBC and kept that lead for 90 minutes.  Jared Stephens scored off a cross from Davis Stupich.  The team continued to pressure hard for a 2nd goal but UNBC did well to keep the game at 1-0 at the half.  Romain Martin, Aki Ishimine worked hard to create some good chances but unfortunately no reward. The 2nd half saw more hard work from the VIU men’s team, Brant Losch and Ben Leggett worked very hard to help Robbie Cochrane record his third shutout of the season.  Robbie had to make a great save late in the game to help solidify the win for VIU.  Chris Arnett, Brant Losch and Ben Leggett all had strong games but Man of the Match went to Leggett.

Women's Soccer
Sept. 19, VIU vs UNBC in Prince George

throwMariner women came out strong to start the game and were unlucky on a number occasions to take the lead, in the 29th minute Kate Flynn gave VIU the lead from 10 yards out, the play was started by Heather Iverson who won the ball off a UNBC player and crossed the ball, UNBC tied the game two minutes later when VIU lost the ball in mid field and were caught on a counter attack by the Timber wolves.

Half Time score
VIU -1, UNBC -1

Second half started same as first with Mariner's dominating the play and again creating number of quality chances but were denied by UNBC keeper who made a diving save off Caity Genereaux shot to keep it tied, VIU took the lead in the 64th minute when Heather Iverson cross was headed into the net by Jolene Nagy, once again the lead didn't last long for VIU as UNBC hit one back a minute later to tie it at 2-2

emilyMariner's took the to another level and the Timber wolves were pinned in their third of the field for the final 20 minutes, Aileen Holder on free header hit it just wide from a corner kick, in the 75th minute Emily Nicholson was taken down from behind on the edge of the penalty box which looked to be just inside but was called a free kick outside the box, Jolene Nagy in the 85th minute walked around her defender and was hauled down well into the penalty box but the ref again gave a free kick outside, VIU had 8 corner kicks in the last 15 minutes.

"We really should have won this game by 3-4 goals based on the play but were unlucky, they only had two chances the whole game and scored on both, Jolene was clearly in the box but refereeing was suspect all day long, it really shouldn't have been an issue if we finished our chances, we're still in pretty good shape, need to have a great week of training as we have two huge games coming up next weekend"
