09/02/09 - A PERFECT WEEKEND
The Mariners won all their matches and games this weekend !!
In doing so the Men's Basketball team remain undefeated at 15-0 and could be on the way to a perfect season, while making history. Back in 92-93 the M's lost one league game and there were a few seasons when they lost only two games in the mid late 90's. Read more in the NNB
In sweeping the Kwantlen Eagles the women's team have a 5 game win streak going. Jessica Stubbs helped VIU in the two victories . On Friday night Jessica had 18 points and 19 rebounds in a 79-48 VIU victory. On Saturday Jess had 11 points and 12 rebounds in a 69-48 victory . Congratulations JESSICA on being named BCCAA player of the week !!

edgarTony Bryce's post game comments ... Nice to be back at home.  Couple solid wins against a good Kwantlen team that beat us in pre-season.  Once again a very balanced attack both nights (everyone hitting the scoresheet on Saturday).  Friday night's game seemed to lack flow and we were not as sharp as I would have liked.  However, we were able to bounce back with a better performance on Saturday.  Jacob Thom was outstanding once again for the Mariners.  Knocking in shots, attacking the rim, and most importantly playing very unselfish and making those around him better.  Also a nice weekend for Andrew Kaban who looked to be back to 100% after battling the injury bug the past few weeks. Looking forward to our last home game of the year on Friday versus Island rival Camosun.  Should be a great environment and hoping for a full house.  Also, our 2 outstanding seniors Henry Bui and Carson Williams will be honoured just prior to the game.

VOLLEYBALL
Glad to be home after the journey to Cranbrook and Castlegar , the volleyball teams returned with 4 victories !
Chris Densmore comments ... After a long bus ride, the guys came out strong against the Selkirk Saints and took care of business in three straight games . We served well as a team with 11 aces. On the negative side, we are still making too many hitting errors. In the COTR game a lack of focus and intensity led to a closer match than it should have been ... needing four games to put the Avalanche away. Poor serving kept the match close as the Mariners missed 22 serves in 4 sets.
The women's volleyball team took both matches 3-0 with Assistant Coach Rob Barcelos running the show, while Head Coach Shane Hyde was at the Nanaimo Awards Banquet.

12/02/09 - IT'S ON !!
The rivalry weekend has finally arrived at VIU. Everything is set for a great weekend of sports and entertainment. We hope to pack the gym with over 1400 fans !!

The VIU Men's team stumbled somewhat this Saturday as they lost 3-1 to the UBC-O Heat that had just lost the night before to the Camosun Chargers. Chris Densmore summarizes the match as follows ...
It was disappointing that in a big match-up of #1 vs #2 in the league, that we didn't show up to play or compete.  Milo and Carson had great matches, but sub par or just average games by the other guys doesn't help.  Games are won and lost by how you serve and pass.  We got out served and out passed.  That was the main difference in the game.  Better passing by us and we could have ran a better offense.  Better serving and they wouldn't have been able to execute as well offensively, play tough serving sets up our defense.  Overall, we only lost by 7 total points.  If each player could have made one smarter decision in crunch time, the match could have easily gone the other way.  The team needs to learn from this experience and regroup for another test this Friday vs UFV.
Should be a great match.
