VOLLEYBALL BRING BACK BRONZE MEDALS
a Nanaimo News Bulletin Story

Neither Malaspina Mariners volleyball team will play in the nationals this year, but the squads did finish the provincials on their own terms.
The Mariner men's and women's volleyball teams each finished third at the B.C. Colleges' Athletic Association provincials, held at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook last week.
After losing their respective finals, the M's men and women were able to end competition on a high by winning bronze-medal matches.
The women's team won its medal by defeating the Capilano Blues 25-18, 25-18, 25-23 Saturday.
A day earlier, the team had missed out on a spot in the finals after losing a close match to the Okanagan Lakers, 25-22, 25-13, 19-25, 23-25, 15-8.
The M's ladies beat the Douglas Royals in the quarterfinals Thursday by scores of 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-23.
The Mariner men had the daunting task of facing the home team, the College of the Rockies Avalanche, in the bronze-medal contest Saturday.
It went down to the wire, with the M's prevailing 25-20, 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 17-15.
The team's gold-medal hopes were dashed a day earlier in the semifinals, when the Capilano Blues beat the Nanaimo team 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23.
The Mariners' run at the provincials also included a three-game sweep of the Okanagan Lakers Thursday, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.
Bryanne Baynes was named Malaspina's player of the game in the women's bronze-medal match, while M's player Mike Muller was player of the game in his team's bronze-medal win.
The two players were also named to their respective tournament all-star teams.
The women's provincial champions this year are the University College of the Cariboo Sun Demons, while the men's champs are the Capilano Blues.
Both the Mariner men's and women's teams went into the provincials seeded fourth after going 15-5 in the regular season.
