A very solid 2008-09 campaign has led to the addition of some serious out of town talent. Head Coach Tony Bryce is pleased to announce the committments of guards Joel Schat and Evan Verdel to the 2009-10 Mariners roster.

joelSchat is a 6'2" shooting guard from the WRCA Warriors.  The Warriors were the Fraser Valley Champions and a very respectable fourth in the Provincial AAA Championships.  "In Joel we get a quality kid, student, and player that can really shoot the basketball. He loves the game and you just can't teach that. There were several programs that were interested in his services over on the Mainland, and I am grateful that he chose to move to the Island to continue his academic-athletic career." evanVerdel is a 6'2" guard from the Belmont Braves in Victoria. "I have seen Evan play on several occasions this year and believe he is the top graduating player on the Island this year.  I love his competitive nature and ability to make things happen in transition.  He is a great talent that I believe has the ability to turn some heads next year as a freshman in this league."
Evan was a 1st team All-Star at the 2009 Island AAA Championships.

Bryce adds, "when I took this program over 3 years ago I wanted to make it Provincially and Nationally known.  I think we are getting there and that is evident in the fact that players are moving to Nanaimo to play in our program.  There were several opportunities for both of these players and we are very excited that they both chose to become a part of the Mariner family".
