MEN's BASKETBALL
vs Kwantlen
February 2010
by Tony Bryce , Head Coach
Two very hard fought wins on the road this weekend against a physical and competitive Kwantlen squad. A couple solid all around team wins.
Friday night we had a great start and jumped out to an early lead. We then ran into a little foul trouble but our bench play continued to play at a high level and we never lost a beat, especially freshman guard Jake Hayton (photo below)and second year forward Fraser Thompson. We led 51-32 at the break. Kwantlen continued to war away the entire game and we eventually put them away late for a 94-68 victory. Mike Wohlers led with 22, Andrew Kaban 15 (photo on left), and Hayton with 14. Thompson led the way on the glass with 11, including a monster follow up dunk.
Saturday was much of the same, a battle from the tip to the final horn. Very physical and intense basketball for 40 minutes was needed to get it done on day two. The first quarter was back and forth, but we were able to pull ahead in the second taking at 45-34 lead into the break. Kwantlen pushed and battled, but we were able to close out the game and win 87-66. Wohlers and Kaban both had 20. However, Jacob Thom followed up a solid outing Friday with an even better performance Saturday as he had 13 points and an outstanding 12 assists in the win.
Next up, the Mariners head to Victoria for the second half of the Island Rivalry. The Mariners face the Camosun Chargers Friday Feb. 5th with the women at 6:00 and the men at 8:00.
