OUTLOOK
ON THE
2004-05 MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM
With
a season of injuries and shortcomings behind the Mariners
Men's Volleyball team, the 2004/05 season proves to be much
different. With 8 new faces on the team this fall,
the Mariners will be young, but talented. Out of the
8 new players, 5 are playing Team BC Volleyball this summer
at the National Team Challenge Cup in Saskatchewan.
Andrew
Battision comes from The Fraser Valley where his club team
won the Gold Medal at the Provincial Championships and then
went on to win a Bronze medal at the National Championships.
For Team BC, Andrew will be competing for one of the
starting leftside positions. Andrew's strengths are
his positive attitude, exceptional passing, and great ball
control.
Ben
Rahier comes from Powell River, but played his club volleyball
for the Comox Valley. The Dukes finished second the
Andrew's team in the Provincial final, but Ben's outstanding
play earned him the Tournament MVP. Ben also has two
Provincial Championships under his belt with Max Cameron when
he was in grade 10 and 11. For Team BC, Ben will be
competing for a starting position in the middle. Ben's
strengths are his competitiveness, attacking abilities, and
his determination to win.
Jeremy
Semple comes from Comox and also played for the Dukes.
Jeremy played power for the Silver Medalists and earned an
All-Star for his play at the Championships. For Team
BC, Jeremy is one of our libero's. His incredible passing
ability along with his desire to improve makes Jeremy a welcome
addition to the Mariners.
Kyle
Murphy comes from Winfield, but played his club volleyball
for the Kelowna Volleyball Club. Kyle was recognized
at the High School Championships as an All-Star for leading
his team to a 5 th place finish. His team didn't have
much height or talent, but Kyle led the way with his great
attitude and determination to win. Kyle is by far one
of the hardest working athletes that I have had an opportunity
to coach. Fro Team BC, Kyle will be competing with
Jeremy for the starting libero position. This competing
will continue over into the fall for the Mariners team.
Jozef
Bienskowski-Gibbs comes from Prince George. This past
club season Jozef did not play for the Prince George club,
but did play for the Mariners Junior team. Jozef received
an All-Star for his Bronze medal performance at the High School
Championships. Jozef led his team with his incredible
blocking and strong attacking
skills.
Two
of the other athletes are transferring from other programs.
Riley Kaminski is transferring from the University
of Saskatchewan where he was a red shirt for the CIS National
Champion Huskies. Also transferring schools is Scott
Weninger who is coming from the Red Deer Kings who were the
CCAA National Champions. These two players will bring
some need experience to our young team.
As
for returning players, the Mariners will have Spencer Hoehn,
Graham Sigalet, Jeff Barth, and Mike Muller coming back to
lead the way for the 2004/05 season. Spencer and Graham,
both 3 rd year players, will be battling things out for the
starting setter position, while Jeff (2 nd year) will be competing
with both Andrew and Riley for a starting position on the
leftside. Mike will be returning for his 2 nd year
and will be competing with Ben for the top middle position.
The 2004/05 Mariners will consist of a group of athletic players
that have played many positions which will produce some creativity
on the court with the different line-ups that we can use.
The group of athletes that have been put together for the 2004/05
season will be successful not only because they are talented,
but more importantly because they are team players that know
what it takes to win and what it means to be part of a team.
