2004-05 MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM PREVIEW

The 2004-2005 Mariner Men's Team promises to be an exciting squad, with a blending of old and new faces.   The M's spent this off-season securing local recruits and bringing some proven veterans back into the fold.

Returning to the Mariners after some time away from the game is former stand-out Jason Hubbs. Hubbs who played as a Mariner during the 98-00 seasons then spent one season with the Langara Falcons. During his last BCCAA season Jason was a leader in scoring (6 th in scoring at 20 ppg) and rebounding (7 th in rebounding at 8 rpg) and was named a first team conference all-star and a provincial tournament all-star. The 6'4" Guard/Forward brings leadership, veteran savvy, and proven production to the Mariner's line up. Returning with Hubbs is another former Mariner who has spent a season away from the game, senior Sean McMann. This explosive 6'5" forward played for the M' from 2000-2003, taking last year off to get stronger Sean returns to the Mariners ready for a solid final year of eligibility, using his leaping ability and physical strength to help the mariner's Offensive attack.

These two veterans will join a solid group of returning players from the 2003-2004 season. Among those include last year's rookie stand-out and Presidents Award Winner Jordan Kinakin who was a league leader in rebounds (2 nd in Rebounds at 11.3 rpg). The 6'9" Center who will be entering his sophomore year will be a vital part of the M's front-court. Also retuning and adding continuity is 6'2" Guard and Wellington Secondary product Graham Giske. The Junior guard is a prolific out side shooter and will be looked to for more leadership and productivity this up-coming season.   The M's will boast one of their most experienced line-ups in recent years with 4 seniors, 1 junior, and 4 sophomore players.

A number of new faces will be joining this group of experienced veterans including some local products. The Mariner's Freshman class helps to round out the M's roster. Local 6'1" Guard Henry Bui is one of the top prospects joining the Mariner's this fall. Bui a Wellington Secondary product is solid defender and physical player who plays' far bigger than his 6'1" frame. Henry was named to the Island All-Star team where he captured the game MVP, he was also named to the High School Provincial All-Star team. Joining Henry is Dover Bay product Edgar Carlson. The 5'10" Guard is a dangerous scorer and brings the ability to play with his back to the basket or step out and knock down a 3 point shot. Edgar was named to the Island All-Star "B" and captured that games MVP award. Rounding out the Freshman class is 6'7" Port Alberni prospect Rory Peffers. Peffers size and leaping ability will add depth to their front court.   It looks to be an exciting season for the M's and their fans.
