Game vs UBC-O Saturday Sept.12, Mariner Field

kateflynMariners came out sluggish against a much improved UBC-O Heat who controlled the play to start the match, defender Andrea Strebel played a through ball to mid fielder Emily Nicholson who beat the Heat keeper with a well placed shot to give VIU the lead in the 15th minute, the Heat tied the score in the 25th minute, Kate Flynn twice got behind the Heat defense and forced the UBC-O keeper to make excellent saves, just as half time was approaching Aileen Holder scored on a header from corner kick by Brianne McKenzie to give Mariners 2-1 lead at half time.

Mariners played a strong second half, controlled majority of the play and didn't give Heat any chances. "We should have been up by three or four at the half, we need to finish better on our chances, UBC-O is much better team than in the past so we are happy to get a win and three valuable points"

Game vs Thompson River University, Sunday Sept.13, Mariner Field

aileenFor the second game in a row Mariners came out slow, this time they were punished by Wolf Pack forward who walked around VIU defense to put the ball behind Mariner's keeper Hollis Roberts for 1-0 lead after 15 minutes, after absorbing early pressure Mariner's found their legs and in the 30th minute were rewarded when Kate Flynn on a pass from Steph Dean placed a rocket into the top corner of the TRU net from 25 yards out, Wolf Pack again took the lead two minutes later.

TRU -2, VIU - 1

Mariner's came out strong to start the second half and took the lead with two goals within ten minutes of the restart, in the 48th minute Aileen Holder's header off a corner tied the match at 2-2, five minutes later Kate Flynn on her own rebound walked around the TRU keeper to put the ball into the empty net to give the Mariner's a 3-2 lead. Flynn with three and Emily Nicholson with two breakaway's had opportunities to add to Mariners lead but Wolf Pack keeper made great saves to keep it a one goal game, VIU made it 4-2 in the 88th minute when Jolene Nagy scored, TRU scored in the 90th minute to make the final score VIU 4, TRU 3

TRU has finished second at Nationals two of the last three years.

"We showed everybody that we can compete and beat a top team, we are a lot stronger mentally this year, offensively we're more dangerous and tough to defend against, there's a long way to go and lot of tough games ahead so we need to keep our focus"
