The best badminton ever to be played in Nanaimo will take place this weekend. Play begins at 11am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. VIU is in the hunt for a team medal and are currently sitting in the bronze medal position. A strong performance this weekend would assure them of a medal. In the individual event held on sunday Megan Yim, a bronze medalist in the 2008 CCAA Nationals will be competing for a ticket to the 2010 national in Alberta. Other medal hopefuls will be Mike Clark and Jen Aronson in Mixed doubles. It should be a great show of top calibre badminton being played on a feature style stadium court !!

09/02/10 - LUKE COUTURE WILL BE REPORTING FROM THE OLYMPICS!! Stay tuned ... Luke Couture of the Mariner badminton is volunteering at the Olympics and has agreed to give us some insight on his activities at the games. 1st Report
He will be involved with maintaining the ice surface at Canada Place (GM Place).
Luke's goal is to be playing badminton at the 2016 Olympics.

18/01/10 - BADMINTON TEAM PLACES SECOND!! The third and last BCCAA Badminton qualifying tournament for 2009-2010 took place at Douglas College on the weekend. VIU athletes were focussed and it showed- the squad finished the 3 game matches that have been narrow losses in the past. The team took 2nd place in the team event and moved up to 3rd overall. 11/01/10 - BADMINTON TAKES TITLES AT CR OPEN VIU badminton team had great results in a strong field at the Campbell River Open this weekend. 5th year player Mike Clark was a triple finalist:runner-up in A singles in a well fought match against Matthew Lim from Richmond; Mike teamed with Bryan Cassels of Victoria to win the A doubles event and then finished a busy day with partner Megan Yim (VIU) in the A mixed final. They were defeated in a very tough battle against Cassels & Manley (CR) 21-14, 16-21, 17-21. Megan Yim was also in the Womens A doubles final with Kylee Abrahamson (former Malaspina Mariner) where they cleanly defeated opponents from Victoria 21-15, 21-19. Jenny Aronson had a very strong singles event finishing fourth overall and lost in the semi-final of "A" Mixed to Clark & Yim (VIU). Jen Abrahamson & Michelle Zhang won the Consolation Womes Doubles. Zhang lost in the consolation singles final after a long battle18-21,21-23, 21-13. Pat Thompson defeated team-mate Zack Yim in the B Mens Singles event and then partnered Yim to win the B Doubles. Next action for the team is January 16-17 at DouglasCollege. This will be the final competition of the regular season and then VIU hosts Provincials on Feb 20-21. Come on out to see some of the best badminton players in Canada. Team event Championship runs Saturday from 11 am - 4 pm and Individual event finals, which are the battles to represent BC at Nationals, will run on Sunday from 11:30am - 4:00pm - these matches should not be missed.

BADMINTON ALMOST DEFENDS TITLE!! VIU Mariners Badminton hosted the 5th annual Team Challenge this weekend. VIU who had a 30-5 matches won/lost record through the first five rounds of play were attempting to defend the title they earned last year. After 6 rounds of hard fought competition Vic One, a well balanced team of young players from Victoria defeated VIU 5 events to 2 in the final round of the Gold Division. The 2 matches won by VIU in the final were; Luke Couture in mens singles over Ross Prager 21-11, 21-14 and Megan Yim / Mike Clark in the mixed doubles over Rachel Wan / Bryan Cassels 21-18, 21-14. Mens doubles could very easily have swung the match in VIU's favour as the 2 mens doubles matches were lost by the narrowest of margins; Mike Clark / Luke Couture were defeated by Riley Trottier / Bryan Cassels 21-19, 21-18 and Pat Thompson / Zack Yim lost to Richard Wan / Riley Trottier 21-19, 21-19. There were many great matches over the course of the weekend and the VIU team looks forward to the first BCCAA tournament on Oct 23-24 at Capilano.

M's BADMINTON FIRST IN KELOWNA!! Luke Couture of the VIU Badminton team placed first at the Kelowna Jr 'A' tournament held this weekend. He went undefeated with victories over Joey Chu 21-19, 21-18 in the semi's and Mitch Downton in the finals 21-9, 21-17.
This result should boost his provincial ranking to number one going into the provincial junoir championships in April !!
In doubles he partnered with Zack Yim to place third. Well done ...

BADMINTON BRONZE AT PROVINCIALS!! VIU Badminton brought home a bronze medal from the 2009 BCCAA Badminton Provincial Championships held at TRU Feb 13-14th.
Megan Yim placed second in the women's singles and unfortunately BC did not receive the wildcard
berth , it went to Alberta.
No nationals for the Mariners this season.
Megan and Luke Couture will be competing in the Kelowna Junior Open next weekend.

The Badminton team is back in action this weekend at Douglas College, after competing in Hawaii over the holidays. The team is currently third in the BCCAA standings and ranked 9th nationally. With one more league tournament left in the schedule and then provincials the M's are contenders for a medal, but what color. 02/12/08 - ISLAND OPEN BADMINTON CHAMP Luke Couture won the U19 singles and mixed doubles events at the Island Open Jr Badminton Tournament on Nov 28-30 in Victoria. In the singles event Luke ran his opponent into the ground, defeating Angus MacDonald 21-17, 17-21, 21-12.
Luke partnered with Vivian Yan in mixed doubles to claim the title over Bryan Cassels and Ayaka Wakatsuk, with game scores of 19-21, 21-14, 21-11.
Zack Yim was runner up in the consolation singles event and teamed up with Luke, placing 3rd in the doubles event.
This was a Badminton BC sactioned A event that will improve Luke's provincial ranking. Luke
was the recipient of the 2008-09 Presidents scholarship for Badminton.

Yim, Mike Clarke and Lena Watt will represent Malaspina and
the BCCAA at the 2008 CCAA National Championships in New Brunswick
(Feb 27 March 1st). Megan will compete in women's singles
and the duo of Lena/Mike will play mixed doubles.

MARINERS AWARDS .... takes spotlight!! At
the 3rd Annual Nanaimo Sports achievement awards dinner the
Mariners won two categories. In the Partners category Megan
Yim and Kylee Abrahamson, national bronze medalists, won the
award but handed it over to Team Plasteras. Read

player of the year. Last season the women's volleyball team
won the provincial gold and a National bronze medal. Accepting
the award was her dad, since she was on the road competing
in Cranbrook.

the team event, at the 3rd BCCAA Badminton tournament of the
year, the best the Mal-U Badminton team could do was fourth
place. Megan Yim was a finalist in the Women's singles individual
event and in Women's doubles Megan teamed with Lena Watt for

MIKE CLARKE wins CR OPEN Mike Clarke
of the Mariner Badminton team won the Men's "A"
singles in the Campbell River Open held Jan 11-13. Mike defeated
Roy Onyschuk from Port Alberni 21-15, 21-6 in the finals.
Chris Sowden and Lek Tang won the Men's "B" doubles
and Chris Sowden teamed up with Megan Yim to win the "B"
mixed doubles. This weekend the team competes at the first

The Mariners placed fourth out of seven teams competing in
the first BCCAA badminton event. The event was hosted at Malaspina

MARINER BADMINTON AT
NATIONALS Megan
Yim and Kylee Abrahamson will represent Malaspina and the
BCCAA at the 2007 CCAA Badminton Nationals. The duo will team
up in womens doubles. This will be Kylee's third appearance
at the nationals.
Her best result has been a silver medal back in 2002.
In the team event there was a hope for a silver medal but

BADMINTON TEAM PLACES SECOND The
Mariner Badminton Team was in action this weekend hosting
Douglas, Langara, Capilano, and Kwantlen Colleges and Thompson
River University for the second tournament of the season.
With another solid team effort, Malaspina managed a second
place finish. Malaspina had key wins to overtake Langara
College but was not able to catch the very powerful Douglas
College squad. Next tournament will be held at TRU February

The Mariner Badminton will compete in its first BCCAA Tournament

Last weekend the team had some great results with Mike Clarke
and Kylee Abrahamson both making the finals in singles at

MARINERS BCCAA BRONZE MEDAL
The Mariner Badminton
team captured the 2006 BCCAA Provincial (team) Bronze medal
this weekend on home court. This weekend they travel to Kamloops
to compete at the Individual championships @ TRU where they
will hope to place some players on the BC team.
This years National Championships
will be held in Alberta at Mount Royal College.
Malaspina
Mariners Badminton got off to a great start at the season
opener in Vancouver this weekend. With a great team effort
the young team finished 3 rd in overall points behind very
strong and experienced teams from Douglas (1 st ) and Langara
College (2 nd ).
Mike Clark had the
'match of the tournament' almost taking out the 3 rd seed,
Phil Weier of Douglas College, in the second round of Mens
Singles in a 7-15, 15-10, 12-15 narrow defeat which lasted
almost 90 minutes and captivated the spectators.

Kylee Abrahamson was
a semi-finalist in womens singles and in womens doubles with
Shiori Ando.
Mayu Inada was defeated
by Dawn Clark of Douglas College in the consolation final
of womens singles.
Barry Arana and Alex

of TRU in the mens doubles consolation final.
Mike Clark and Megan
Yim defeated Chikkara and Katie Tucker of TRU in the mixed

The Mariner
Badminton team participated in the Campbell River Open
January 6-8th.
Malaspina's Mike Clark placed first in both the men's doubles
B and mixed doubles B events, with partners Hikaru Otsuka
and Kylee Abrahamson, respectively.
Janice Walker (coach of the M's) also won two categories,
teaming with Geraldine McLean of Victoria to win the women's
doubles A event and also capturing the mixed doubles 40-and-over
class with Marc Petreman (a former mariner).
Barry Arana and Megan Yim won mixed doubles C,
with Arana also finishing first in
the men's singles C division.
Annie Zhang won the women's singles D event.Nenad Biga and
