01/12/09 - BCCAA Athlete of the Week !! Mike Wohlers of the men's basketball team was awarded BCCAA Athlete of the week Mike Wohlers is in his third year, but first with Mariners basketball. Mike has been a huge reason for our early success this season. This past weekend was no exception. Douglas played very well this past weekend and shot the ball exceptionally well. It was a battle to get out of there with 2 wins, and in large part it was due to the play of Wohlers. He gives us an outside presence that extend defenses and allow our big men up front to go to work inside.
In Friday nights victory, Wohlers led the VIU attack with 20 points, incuding 12 in the second half. Saturday he bounced back with another solid performance with 26 points on 9/17 shooting, including 5/8 from beyond the arc and 3/4 from the line.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAY CIS SCHOOLS Comments by Tony Bryce Head Coach Men's Basketball team .....
VIU Men's Basketball travelled to the mainland to battle some CIS competition this past weekend. Friday night the Mariners battled a solid SFU squad in a scrimmage format, playing 5 total quarters. The scrimmage went well, but I thought our intensity and communication could have been much better. We came out a little flat and seemed intimidated to start, but after the first quarter did a much better job. Overall a very good experience for our younger players looking to make the transition to the post secondary game.
Saturday the M's visited UBC and once again played 5 quarters in a scrimmage format. UBC is a deep talented squad but I felt we were much better than on Friday night. I thought physically we battled hard and did not let them push us around, which was very nice to see. It was a fantastic effort from the entire group and compared to last years scrimmage, I felt for the most part this past Saturday we hung around. What we need to understand is "if we practice and play consistently at that level then we will be tough to beat, but it has to happen every time we step in the gym".

M's GO 3 of 4 AT CAMOSUN A great start to 2009 season winning both volleyball games and the men's basketball game. Our women's basketball team had a 17 point lead against the #1 team in the league, but failed to finish. Coach Bill McWhinnie thought it was a very good team effort that probably deserved a better fate.
Brittany Knievel had a strong game with 20 points and 6 rebounds.
The men's basketball team thumped the Chargers 81-48 with Andrew Kaban contributing 15 points.
Coach Bryce comments ....
A decent first game back after a long break.Thought our effort, especially on the defensive end was very good. Another balanced attack which is always nice to see. Credit to the players for understanding our depth and that we have a very balanced attack, with several guys that can score when put in the right opportunity. They are all playing very unselfish basketball and not worried about individual touches or points. That mindset will be the key for us as we continue with a very tough second half of the schedule. I thought we were good, but we will need to be better next weekend. We did a very good job of taking care of the basketball. Defensively at times we were undisciplined and it led to easy baskets.I also felt at times on the defensive end we got away from the game plan. Those things will need to be corrected next weekend with Douglas and Capilano in town
Offensively we were just okay. You could see a little rust and we will work to correct that in practice this week. Our timing and spacing is in need of improvement. But overall, a win on the road is always a great thing in this league.I was very nervous going into this one, and I am glad that the fella's answered the challenge and played with great energy. The VIU Men's Basketball team will face the University of

atop the Big West conference with an 11-5 mark before being
bounced in the opening round of their conference tournament.
The Tigers, whose most recent trip to the NCAA tournament

13/08/08-MARINERS MEN'S BASKETBALL ADD MBAPPE TO ROSTER!
Mariners men's basketball coach Tony Bryce is very pleased
to announce
the committment of 6'2" guard Banimb Mbappe for the 2008-2009
season.
Mbappe played last season for the Ballenas Whalers of Parksville.
He
is a very explosive athlete and has the ability to do it all.
He
averaged 39 points/game in the 2008 AAA Island Championships,
which is
almost unheard of. But Bryce believes he has so much more
to offer than just scoring.
"I am very curious to see him with other talented players
around him.
He can score, but I also think he sees the floor very well
and has the
ability to break people down with the dribble, thus create
scoring
opportunities for his teammates."
Mbappe is currently back home with family and friends in Spain
as
coach Bryce finalizes the necessary paper work.
But, there is no doubt coach is excited for his arrival.
"I felt we needed an athlete on the perimter and Banimb
is exactly
that. He will definately add some excitement, because he does
so many
things well, and is extremely explosive"
