MEN'S
SOCCER

A rich tradition of excellence
has built the Mariner soccer program at VIU.
This past season
they captured the Provincial Bronze medal.
In past years the
M's have won six provincial titles and one national title
for the men, and four provincial titles and one national title
for the women make the Mariner Field in Nanaimo an exciting
place to be from September through November.
Nanaimo is a soccer town, so the
teams receive tremendous media and community support.

MARINERS 5-1 WINNERS
!!
After
getting spanked by UVIC on thursday 6-0 and receiving numerous
injuries the men rebounded with a gutsy effort against Pennisula
College on sunday winning 5-1. Chad Allwood scored a hat trick
with Mike Warren and Scott Hobson tallying with a goal each.
Conner Malbon, Jesse Winter and Kyle Phillips had outstanding
games. Our next game is Thursday 2 pm at Mariner field against
Skagit Valley from Mount Vernon, Washington.
The womens team were also victorious with a 5-0 win over the
Div 1 Nanaimo women's team last week. The Mariner women's
team also plays Skagit on Thursday with their game going at
12noon.

MEN'S SOCCER CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH
A
solid weekend has the Men's
Soccer team setting their sights on the Provincial Championships
Oct 28-29 in Kamloops. The Men's and Women's teams defeated
UBC-O on Saturday followed by ties with TRU on Sunday.

MAL BRONZE AGAIN AT SOCCER PROVINCIALS
The
Mariner Men had to settle for a Bronze Medal at the 2006 Provincial
Soccer Championships held in Kamloops this past weekend. After
a semi-final loss to Capilano in OT the best the M's could
do was Bronze. Stuart Barker scored with three minutes to
go in the game ... but then Cap scored the golden goal. The
M's did come through with a 2-1 win over Douglas for the medal.
Goals by Stuart Barker and Mike Warren with Adrian Byra earning
the win in net.

MARINERS NAMED PROVINCIAL ALL-STARS
Austyn
Brackett , Stu Barker , Songmun Choi and Jesse Winter were
named to the BCCAA First team and Erik Waldriff, Kevin Booker,
Rebecca Swan made the second team . These players were awarded
their All-Stars status by votes from coaches in the league.
The womens team won the Mike Bertram Fair Play award.
NOW THE PROVINCIALS FOR THE MEN ....
The Men's team placed second in league play with a record
of 6w-2l-1t and depart this week for the Provincial Championships
this weekend in Kamloops hosted at Thompson Rivers University.
They meet third place Capilano Blues in the semi-finals on
Saturday at 10am. VIU has a win a nd a tie against Cap
this year.
VIU is ranked #6 in National rankings.
Last
season the M's were Bronze Medalists at the Provincials

MARINERS MOVE TO #9 NATIONALLY !!
The
latest CCAA National rankings have our men ranked #9.
After a solid weekend earning a tie 2-2 and a win 3-1 over
Capilano Blues the Mariner Men's soccer team is now sitting
in second spot in the BCCAA with a 3-2-2 record.

MARINER MEN WIN !!
On
Sunday September 9th the Mariner Men produced five goals to
defeat Langara Falcons 5-2.
Filling the net for the M's were Erik Waldriff with two and
Songmon Choi, Jesse Winter and Kyle Phillips a goal each.

SOCCER .... ROAD TRIP SPLIT
Both
Mariner soccer teams defeated UBC-Okanagan on Saturday, Sept
16th. The men were down 2-0 until Erk Waldriff scored a natural
hat trick for the 3-2 victory.
The women earned a 2-0 shutout versus UBC-O.
Both Mariner team were then shutout on Sunday by the TRU wolf
Pack .... men 2-0 and the women 3-0.
Next home game is against the UNBC Timberwolves this Saturday,
Sept 23rd on the Mariner Field.

MARINERS defeat PIRATES 2-0
The
Mariner Men's soccer team defeated Pennisula College Pirates
2-0.
Both goals came in the second half and both were scored by
Erik Waldriff.
Mariners begin league play next weekend with Douglas College
Royals on Saturday and Langara College Falcons on Sunday game
times are 1pm for women and 3pm for the men both days.

MARINERS vs CIS SOCCER
The
Mariner Men's soccer team faced two CIS schools on the weekend
in exhibition play. On Saturday the M's were in Victoria to
face the Vikings. It was 1-1 at the half with the Mariner
goal coming from Stu Barker at the 40min mark.
The
Viking then took control and finished with a 4-1 win.
The Mariners then caught an early morning ferry to the mainland
for a match with UCFV Cascades. In extreme heat the Mariners
battled .... but were defeated 1-0. Coach Milholm as well
as the CIS coaches were impressed with his Mariners play.

Cowichan edges Mariners 1-0
A
lone goal by Cowichan late in the game clinched the exhibition
victory.
Despite controlling the play and several great chances the
M's were unable to find the back of the net.

Mariners defeat Nanaimo United
On
Saturday night the Mariners defeated Nanaimo United 1-0 with
the goal coming from Erik Waldriff ..... a corner early in
the second half. This was the first exhibition game for the
M's.

Pennisula College Tuesday August 29th 12noon on the Mariner
Field.

MARINER FIELD !!
The
Mariners Field will be open soon and the M's are beginning
to celebrate.
This
field will host all Mariner home games plus VIU intramural
events and physical education classes. Athletic Director Bruce
Hunter (Far left) was on hand for the opening of the adjacent
field.
