16/11/09 - VOLLEYBALL TEAMS WIN IN CRANBROOK
The men's and women's volleyball teams returned from Cranbrook with a 3-1 and 3-2 wins for the men and two 3-0 victories for the women.
Head Men's Coach Chris Densmore comments .... Although the two wins this past weekend were not picture perfect, they were great for the team. Everyone got to play and contribute to the win. On Friday, 1st year leftside Greg Howe stepped up coming off the bench and played well. On Saturday, another 1st year player, Jan Engel played great for the Mariners. In the 5th set, Jan served 3 straight points as a serving sub to give the Mariners a 2 point cushion. The 5th set ended 15-13. That 2 point cushion helped give the Mariners some breathing room. The Mariners will need to play much better this upcoming weekend at the Island Rivalry. I am excited for the match as I know the boys will step up their game and come prepared to compete against the Chargers.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL ADDS POLISH PAIR !!
Krzysztof Orman will be a great addition to the Mariners team in the 2009/10 season. His international beach experience will help bring some experience to the team. When utilized the right way, beach volleyball players make great indoor players. They make smarter decisions, have great ball control, and have a variety of attacking weapons. With Milo Warren not returning and Scott Weninger finishing his eligibility, Krzysztof will help fill the gap. "I am looking forward to seeing what Krzysztof can bring to the Mariners next year" comments VIU Men's Volleyball Head Coach Chris Densmore. A member of Polish National Beach Volleyball Team (2005-2007), won a Bronze Medal at FIVB Under 21 World Beach Championship (2006), Silver Medalist at Under 20 European Beach Championship (2006)
Sticking with the Polish theme, past season assistant coach Raf Korkowski has decided to trade in the coaching position for a spot on the team. Raf's experience and leadership will for sure help the Mariners get back to their winning ways in the BCCAA and CCAA. It will be great to have Raf's offense as well as his consistent all round play. This past season the Mariners had a great season, but were very inexperienced. Adding the Polish pair of Raf and Krzysztof will help to add valuable knowledge and experience to the team. Watch out for the Polish connection next year as I think they will both have great seasons for the Mariners.

I am very excited to become a member of the VIU volleyball program! It has been a very strong and consistent team over the years and I look forward to keep up that tradition. I know most of the current players and coaching staff very well and should be an easy transition to make to play at this level. VIU also got me interested by the academic courses it offers and fits what I have planned for my future, I feel like I have made a great decision coming to VIU and look forward to come and compete.
