14/04/09 - MARINERS SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE ..
Sarah KellyThe Mariner family is very saddened to announce the passing of a former Malaspina athlete, Sarah Kelly. Sarah played for the Mariners in 2002-03 when the team captured the BCCAA Gold medal and went on to win the Silver Medal in the CCAA National Championships in Quebec City. Sarah played her high school volleyball for Duchess Park, in Prince George where her team captured the AAAA high school championship. Sarah was named the top defensive player that year. Sarah came to Malaspina as a very gifted defensive player. She was a hard worker and a great teammate. Sarah was the type of player that would never let a ball drop on defense. She was not afraid to work hard. What the Mariner Family will remember most about Sarah was her fun, easy going style. Sarah had a beautiful smile and a contagious laugh. Although Sarah has been away from the program for some time she will never be forgotten. On behalf of the coaching staff, players of past and present we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Kelly family.

02/02/09 - B. GRYDELAND BCCAA ATHLETE OF WEEK
britt grydelandCongrats Britt .....This past weekend the Mariners took on two teams who were both fighting hard for playoff positioning. On Friday the Mariners took on a very determined UFV team.  The Mariners stood only 2 points up on the Cascades who put up a very strong challenge. VIU’s offence has been historically strong on the outsides, but Britt’s strong play allowed the Mariner’s to score points in runs through the middle. The Middle attack is an area that UFV defends well but Britt was able to tally up 8 kills as well as adding a block and an ace to contribute 10 offensive points in only 4 sets. Britt continued her strong play on Saturday tallying up 6 more kills, 4 stuff blocks for another 10 offensive points in only 3 sets. Britt’s presence in the middle made both teams this weekend pay attention to her which in turn allowed some open swings for the rest of the Mariner players.
