Certainly, there are some key skill sets that an individual should consider acquiring to improve their employability or advance in their career. Which courses and skill sets are best truly depends on what specific environmental area an individual would like to specialize.  There is a significant amount of fisheries and environmental monitoring-related work occurring throughout western Canada. Typically, this work is associated with private development, oil & gas exploration, mining activities, highway construction, urban development, power production, and other resource extraction activities. 

With that said, here are some general course and/or skill set recommendations.

For fisheries-related field work:

• Electrofishing Certification
• Fish Identification
• Fish Inventory Skills
• Fish Habitat Inventory & Assessment
• Fish Habitat Restoration
• Or, as one in the Essential Fisheries Field Skills Certificate Program

Also:

• Swift Water Rescue
• First Aid Certification

For environmental monitoring-related work:

• Environmental Monitoring for Construction Projects
• Erosion & Sediment Control
• In-stream Construction Techniques
• Water Quality Sampling & Design
• Or, as included in the Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program  

Also:

• First Aid Certification

For employment as an Erosion Control specialist:

• Erosion & Sediment Control (ESC)
• ESC- Application of Best Management Practices
• Certified Professional in Erosion Sediment Control (CPESC) – Review course
• Certified Professional in Erosion Sediment Control (CPESC) –Exam

Also:

• First Aid Certification
