The study of sociology provides students with knowledge and skills highly desired in a rapidly changing economic, social and cultural environment. The knowledge and research skills used in sociology are widely applicable and through the study of sociology students develop their ability to think critically, to provide thoughtful, reasoned analysis and to communicate effectively.

Take a look at the contents of your introductory textbook and you will find topics of use in a wide array of occupations: social policy, market research, law, demography, social work, politics, human resources, many areas of business and commerce, statistics, activism, employment counselling, health services, urban planning, environmental studies. Indeed it is hard to find an occupation for which sociology cannot provide a useful foundation.

Of course you just might find that sociology itself is a draw. Research and teaching opportunities in this field generally require graduate training at the M.A. and/or Ph.D. level.
