Students Assisting Students
The Students-Assisting-Students program is designed to help students with documented disabilities. Student Assistants can help with:
- Note-taking
- Study skills
- Reading
- Research
- Time management and organizational skills
- Orientation to other University services and resources such as the Library and Computer Labs
Students-Assisting-Students receive valuable experience which may be useful in their chosen careers.
Participants in the Students-Assisting-Students program are carefully screened, trained and supervised. Experience working as a peer helper or tutor is helpful, but is not required.
The Students-Assisting-Students program is funded by Vancouver Island University
Students hired for the program must
- Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Be friendly and non-judgemental.
- Possess both an understanding of, and sensitivity to, non-traditional learners and people with disabilities.
- Be able to successfully manage the demands of academic studies, as well as Students-Assisting-Students responsibilities.
- Demonstrate competence in the course in which help is required.
- Be interested in basic helping, communication and referral skills.
- Make a time commitment of one full semester.
- Be available for up to 10 hours per week (hours may vary from week to week).
- Be enrolled in a minimum of 3 courses in each semester.
- Undergo a criminal record check.
