The Flashlight Program

Founded in 1992, the Flashlight Program is an award-winning service created by the Teaching, Learning and Technology (TLT) Group, a not-for-profit corporation committed to improving teaching and learning with technology, especially in higher education. The program provides four kinds of service:

  1. Flashlight Online, a powerful web-based tool that includes item banks, model surveys, and the ability to adapt surveys created by other authors.
  2. Subscriber materials such as Flashlight Evaluation Handbook with dozens of topic guides and templates, Flashlight Cost Analysis Handbook, "Asking the Right Questions (ARQ) materials for faculty support and development, and other materials.
  3. Free materials online: F-LIGHT (periodical); articles and books by Steve Ehrmann
  4. Services: talks, training, help with grant proposals, and external evaluation. For example, anyone associated with a TLT Group subscriber institution can attend free online Flashlight briefings on different evaluation and assessment topics every couple weeks.

Vancouver Island University is a subscribing member of the Flashlight Program. As an employee of the university, you can access these tools by contacting our centre and requesting a username and password. Many of the resources can be accessed online without a password.

Request Login ID and Password
Create surveys, small item banks, ballots, and other online forms. It is appropriate for use by faculty members, staff, and students, and has been used for program evaluation, scholarship of teaching and learning, accreditation self-studies, feedback forms, courses in survey research, and even to provide online voting for student and faculty elections. Contact our centre for a Login ID, password and directions.
