Purpose:
This research study is part of the Carnegie Academy for the Advancement
of Teaching and Learning Campus program. VIU is one of several leadership sites investigating the impact of student undergraduate research on student learning. Other participating institutions involved in the larger study are the University of Akron, University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, Notre Dame University, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Central Florida, Dominican University, the Centre for Excellence at the University of Gloucestershire, and the Council for Undergraduate Research. More information on this project is available at the VIU Teaching & Learning Centre's Undergraduate Research Leadership page.
This survey is part of a larger study planning to address five questions:
- What is undergraduate research (inquiry, discovery, investigation)? How can responses to this question be contextualized by institutional nature and values while establishing “common ground”?
- Why should we integrate undergraduate research?
- What is the nature of the impact of undergraduate research with students, faculty, institutions?
- How do we gather evidence of student undergraduate research learning, faculty learning, and institutional learning?
- How do we build on the best of what is known, share our learning and contribute to the larger conversations about undergraduate research?
Benefits:
The findings will be part of an international study based in The Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Campus Program.
The study findings will contribute to the Undergraduate Research leadership sites' task of identifying the strengths and issues associated with student participation in undergraduate research. The results will contribute towards presentations to be given at various conferences, CUR Conference (June 2008), ISSOTL Conference (Oct 2009), as well planned publications.)
Definition:
The draft definition of Undergraduate Research at VIU is a broad one:
“An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original, intellectual, creative, or practical contribution to human understanding within or across disciplines, the community and the teaching-learning process.”
The approximate length of this survey is 10-15 minutes.
