Network Storage
Network Storage Available at Vancouver Island University
Faculty, staff and students with a regular Capitan or Discovery computer account are automatically allocated personal network storage. This is known as your U: drive. Access to your U: drive is restricted to yourself and cannot be shared with others. Windows users are automatically connected to their U: drive when they log on to their Capitan account on campus. If you wish to connect to your U: drive from off campus please see the VPN web pages.
Network shares can be set up so files can be shared by a department, by a small group of users, between an instructor and their students, or between students. These are are spaces set up on the server whose intent is to provide an easy method for sharing files. These shares can exist on the Capitan (Employee) domain or the Discovery (Student) domain, depending on what is required.
Both U: drives and Network shares are subject to a quota limit.
Mapping to a Network Share
Please see our web page: Mapping to a Network Drive (Share)
Mac Users
To access your U: drive, please contact the Helpdesk and request that your U: drive be shared. Once it has been shared, please see our web page for Instruction on mapping to your U: drive
Quota Limits
Quota limits are placed on all network storage, including U: drives, network shares and Employee Email. The quota limit is not placed on the share itself, but applied against each user of that share. This means that in the case of a network share used by a group, one person can reach their quota and be unable to add or save any more files, while other users in the group will not have a problem. This also means that the size of the file is counted against the person who last saved the file (not necessarily against the original creator of the file).
- For Faculty and staff the default quota for network shares is the same as for U: drives: 250MB
- For Students the default quota for U: drives is 200MB
